Just read this from another board. It is unsubstantiated

as the OP didn't provide a link.

Anil Kumar Khanna head of the Asian Tennis Federation is looking at developing a 5th Slam which would be introduced between 2020-2022. Silent discussion have been ongoing privately for the last 12 months however details are now being discussed. Facilities are being looked at, with Beijing and Tokyo being the two favourites destinations. An Indoor Slam is what many are wanting however the sheer magnitude of that is what is being considered at the moment. Past slam Champions and current players are central with the discussion with how it could and should work. It is still in early negotiations however it is looking increasingly likely that a fifth slam will be introduced.

Would a 5th Indoor Slam be welcome to tennis fans ?

What do you guys think?

I know China is making big money now and really

wants a big GS Tennis event but I think it will be a

battle with the Arab Emirates who are pushing

for the same thing with Dubai and/or Doha.

I don't think the players want a 5th slam. I think keeping the slams to just 4 is the way to keep it. I like the limited number of opportunities players have to win.

A 5th slam would be okay IF and only IF these tennis associations can get together and space them out evenly along with the tour finals.

Ive always loved the different surfaces and indoor/outdoor options of tennis. So those being completely represented after this hypothetical 5th slam will be so awesome.

Tennis already has a 5th slam, it's called the Olympics, and the reason it's so special is because it's not only about personal triumph, it's also about representing ones country.

A official 5th slam in my opinion is the dumbest idea, leave as is....

4 or 5 slam, I still hope they get together and space it out evenly. My OCD kicks in when i see the damn year schedule.

What indicators are you seeing which make it look like a fifth slam is on the way?

Also, welcome to Tennis Frontier! :)

If it ever did happen, there is a 0% chance it would be indoors. Could you imagine how cavernous the venue would have to be? You need at least 2 large stadium courts, at least 4 other stadium courts, about 20 other courts for outside court matches and practice courts. Just not feasible.

Why is it a dumb idea?

I don't buy your argument about the Olympics being the 5th slam, it only happens once every 4 years and it doesn't even award 1000 points.

The YEC is more of a 5th slam than anything else.

I welcome the idea of a 5th slam, long as there are other considerations, like doing away with some of the other events to make it work.

I look at the WTA calendar next to my computer and wonder why we need to further drain the energies of the players at year end. Sure some players get a couple of months off, but many do not, with the year end tournaments in late October. Players start training for the down under events in early December, before they embark on the long trip to New Zealand and Australia. The quest to placate the Chinese or the Emirates for holding an additional Grand Slam is just not something I relish. The "Big Four" should remain as such, and to do away with some lesser events to hold a 5th slam does not make sense.
The smaller events allows fans who are not in the big centres to go and see competitive tennis in their own local meccas. Nevertheless, it does make for a good debate, but nothing more.
