It's worth noting that the defending champion is Bojana Jovanovski, she beat Julia Cohen of USA to get tast year's 280 points.

Since I like the Pliskova twins, I am pulling for them!

But you don't think she'll defend it?

Heck NO!
Donna Vekic will probably not win it either.
Look at Bad Gastein last week, none of the top seeds survived, I am expecting similar results here.

As long as I am concerned, this lady could win it:

or this one:

This depends. You make out Meusburger winning Bad Gastein was some big shock, but she was one of the favourites to win. Serena winning Bastad was obvious, as was Halep winning Budapest. Vinci winning Palermo wasn't that shocking either, ok it wasn't believed she'd beat Errani, but it was the obvious final before a ball was hit.

In general things are going to be less predictable at the lower tiers, the players are of lower level, they are less consistent, they are more prone to having a bad week, there is less of a gap in level between the players. But it's also wrong to make out like it's some lottery either.

At least for me.

She was joint 3rd favourite with bookmakers along with Annika Beck, behind Petkovic and Barthel.

It really wasn't that shocking when you took form guide into account. She'd just been to the final in Budapest and went 3 sets with Halep (who is better than anyone that was in Bad Gastein), and was bringing that good form into her home event in conditions that were an advantage for her over her opponents (altitude).

Ons Jabeur always gets a wildcard every year at Doha. She's only 19, she's not a super talent but is definitely like top 100 material. I think her results are on the up on the ITF circuit this year. It's still a bad loss from Jovanovski's point of view though of course. I think she was injured though, because she has now withdrawn from Carlsbad next week.

Only yesterday, she has been on a tear in ITF recently, just graduated to the big leagues, these are her first wins on WTA!

Though Jabeur has had plenty of success at the ITF Women's Circuit level, winning three of her five titles this year, she just recorded her first WTA main draw match win here on Monday in the first round against Daria Gavrilova.

The WTA website has been slacking on updating the scores and so have I!

Shahar Peer will meet Elina Svitolina in the Finals.
None of the top seeds made it.

Elina Svitolina

Congrats, Svitolina, on winning your first title! That must be thrilling.

She's only 18, so this could be the first of many championships.

That's a great pic, Kiu. Thanks for posting it.
