Saw some of Barthel's match. She came through pretty easy yesterday.

^ for those who're wondering about the outcome: unfortunately, Petko didn't win another game. Petra Martic won, 7:6, 5:7, 3:6 in the longest match in the tournament's history (3:11 hours). apparently, Petkovic was hampered by some GI issues.

other results:
Lisa-Maria Moser (AUT)* d Elena Bogdan (ROU) 7 - 6 (6) | 2 - 6 | 6 - 4 |
Viktorija Golubic (SUI) d [5] Kiki Bertens (NED) 6 - 2 | 6 - 2 |
Andrea Hlavackova (CZE) d Eleni Daniilidou (GRE) | 6 - 3 | 6 - 1 |
[2] Annika Beck (GER) d Shahar Peer (ISR) | 7 - 5 | 6 - 3 |
Mandy Minella (LUX) d Dia Evtimova (BUL) | 6 - 2 | 2 - 6 | 6 - 3 |
Estrella Cabeza Candela (ESP) d Tadeja Majeric (SLO) | 6 - 1 | 6 - 3 |
[6] Chanelle Scheepers (RSA) d Anna Schmiedlova (SVK) | 6 - 1 | 6 - 4 |
Elina Svitolina (UKR) d Michaela Honcova (SVK) | 6 - 2 | 6 - 2 |
Patricia Mayr-Achleitner (AUT)** d Tereza Mrdeza (CRO) | 6 - 4 | 6 - 3 |
Alexandra Cadantu (ROU) d Maria Joao Koehler (POR) | 6 - 2 | 6 - 4 |

* the 22-year old's first match on the WTA tour level
** likened the match to "playing against a rubber wall". apparently, Mrdeza likes moonballs.

Petkovic is struggling a lot...kinda feel sorry for her.She is 26yrs old and needs to start playing better before its too late..She should fire her coach and trainer for starters...

^ yeah, it's a bummer about Petko, i really like her (game), too bad she doesn't seem able to put together another run.

anyway, i guess i'll have to oblige with Kiu's request/joke/order (warning, i might not be around on the weekend), here are yesterday's results (just four matches, weird scheduling):

1st round:
Yvonne Meusburger (AUT) d Jasmina Tinjic (BIH) | 6 - 0 | 6 - 0 |*

2nd round:
[8] Karin Knapp (ITA)** d Alexandra Cadantu (ROU) | 7 - 6 (5) | 4 - 6 | 6 - 1 |
Andrea Hlavackova (CZE) d Viktorija Golubic (SUI) | 5 - 7 | 6 - 1 | 6 - 0 |
Lisa-Maria Moser (AUT)*** d [1] Mona Barthel (GER) | 6 - 2 | 4 - 3 |

* ouch.
** from partly german-speaking South Tyrolia, as the name gives away, so it's a semi-home tournament for her.
*** Barthel had to retire due to a shoulder injury. this was Moser's second match on tour level. she's now got a 2-0 WTA level record and a win over a top 40 player ;) currently ranked 725. will move almost 300 spots if she goes out in the next round. says with the prize money, she'll finally buy new clay court shoes, her current ones are just about done.

as to your question, Chelsia - Meusburger has been around for a while, in fact, she's going on thirty. never made a big impact anywhere, though. reached second rounds once or twice at all the slams, but never got any further. no WTA titles. career high ranking of 60. currently in the 80ies. she'd have to take the title to get in the 60ies again. don't expect too much. she's mostly just enjoying the home court advantage right now. and isn't the only one - with Mayr-Achleitner and Moser, the austrian ladies have done exceptionally well here.

Kiu, you're really having me do this, ey? alright, one more time, here we go:

Patricia Mayr-Achleitner (AUT) d Petra Martic (CRO) | 6 - 4 | 6 - 4 |
Elina Svitolina (UKR) d [6] Chanelle Scheepers (RSA) | 7 - 5 | 1 - 6 | 6 - 1 |
Arantxa* Rus (NED) d Estrella Cabeza Candela (ESP) | 5 - 7 | 7 - 5 | 6 - 3 |
Yvonne Meusburger* (AUT) d [3] Irina-Camelia Begu (ROU) | 6 - 3 | 6 - 3 |
[2] Annika Beck (GER) d Mandy Minella (LUX) | 2 - 6 | 6 - 4 | 6 - 4 |

* i still don't get over the fact that a tennis player born in 1990 named Arantxa was supposably NOT named after Sánchez Vicario. i got a feeling that Daddy managed to convince Mommy that it's "just a real pretty name" for a Dutch girl.

Thanks for the info on Meusburger, johnsteinbeck.
She is doing well, so far, in this event.

Am I the only one who thinks Yvonne looks like a quirky teen from some of my favorite John Hughes films? :D

Ha! She really does, doesn't she? And he filmed some of them in Chicago, right? At least Ferris Bueller.

Congrats to Yvonne on her first singles title! Winning in Austria must make it even more special.

He filmed Ferris Bueller and Sixteen Candles here for sure. I'd have to go back and see, but I thought the Breakfast Club was based off a North Shore HS.
