The Tournament:

The Australian Open is a tennis tournament held annually at Melbourne Park in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The tournament is the first of the four Grand Slam tennis events held each year, preceding the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open. The Australian Open starts in the middle of January and continues for two weeks coinciding with the Australia Day holiday. It features men's and women's singles; men's, women's, and mixed doubles; junior's championships; and wheelchair, legends, and exhibition events. Until 1987, it was played on grass courts, but since then two types of hardcourt surfaces have been used: green-coloured Rebound Ace up to 2007 and blue Plexicushion since 2008.

First held in 1905 as the Australasian championships, the Australian Open has grown to become one of the biggest sporting events in the Southern Hemisphere. Nicknamed "the happy slam", the Australian Open is the highest attended Grand Slam event, with more than 902,000 people attending the 2023 tournament. It was also the first Grand Slam tournament to feature indoor play during wet weather or extreme heat with its three primary courts, Rod Laver Arena, John Cain Arena and the refurbished Margaret Court Arena equipped with retractable roofs.

About Melbourne:

Melbourne is the capital and most populous city of the Australian state of Victoria, and the second-most populous city in both Australia and Oceania. Its name generally refers to a 9,993 km2 (3,858 sq mi) metropolitan area known as Greater Melbourne, comprising an urban agglomeration of 31 local municipalities, although the name is also used specifically for the local municipality of City of Melbourne based around its central business area. The metropolis occupies much of the northern and eastern coastlines of Port Phillip Bay and spreads into the Mornington Peninsula, part of West Gippsland, as well as the hinterlands towards the Yarra Valley, the Dandenong and Macedon Ranges. It has a population over 5 million (19% of the population of Australia, as per 2021 census), mostly residing to the east side of the city centre, and its inhabitants are commonly referred to as "Melburnians".

Regarding the above, I did not watch the match, but I got some highlights. Gomez is not a bad player, he was going for it at the beginning. Fonseca new defensive skill set nullified that, his forehand did the rest, not only winners but some middle of the court torpedos that simply could not be handled.

I noticed a weak second serve here or there, but then I checked the serve stats again ...

Joao Fonseca is one win away from his first career Grand Slam main draw. Defeats Coleman Wang 60 63 in 53 minutes
12 consecutive wins, 14 consecutive sets.
Great stuff!
He becomes the fourth teenager after 2000 to apply multiple bagels at major's qualifiers. The other three are Sinner, Tiafoe and Coria.

His last match in the qualies will be against Argentina's Tirante, a very solid player now ranked 115. H2H is one all, hard court and current form give JF a quite heavy favorite tag... He is actually getting in to court with this tag on those last matches and simply not feeling it. He is a nightmare first round for any seed (if he wins his next match).

Joao Fonseca is now one set away from his first Grand Slam main draw
He won 15 consecutive sets.Lost 2 serve points in the first set 64 v Agustin Tirante
Fonseca is into his first Grand Slam main draw without losing a set in qualifying defeats Tirante 64 61!
Well done young man!

BTW 18 yo Landaluce and 19yo Tien are into the main draw of the AO, it is the first time that 3 teenagers successfully qualify for a Grand Slam main draw since US Open in 2015.

That’s a tough draw for Carlos, if he gets that far. And if others do too. I’d like to see Medvedev make the final and win the first 2 sets again.. :lol6:

Fonseca wins 6x4 6x1 against Tirante. There are very long highlights of the match on YouTube (around 75% of the points played are there).

Very high level. Tirante threw everything he had. No hyperbole, it was a match easily on par with most ATP 250/500 finals I have seen.

Fonseca faced a few break points this time, saved them all. Had a small blip in the beginning of the second set, he lost chances to have a double break when he was receiving at 3x0, then serving at 3x1 he missed an overhead to go 15x40. Erased the two break points with poise, and sailed from there.

Nobody wants to face this kid on R1. Honestly, he can face just about anyone right now. Really impressed.

P.S. Brazilian stalwart Thiago Monteiro also qualifies.

Just saw that it is Fonseca x Rublev in R1. I like Rublev, but on current form, he will be 3 an out.

Wow, that's an exciting match-up. Rublev will probably be the best player he's faced. He did play (and lose to) Berretini and Norrie last year, but it was before his current surge.

It is impossible to not be excited at this point.

Oh, in all matches (including futures, challengers, qualies) he's 42-22 on the pro level. He's won his last 13 matches, 16 of 17, and 32 of 39. Meaning, he's been getting better and better. In other words:

Jan to July 22, 2024: 14-15
July 29 - Nov 11: 15-7.
Dec 18 - present: 13-0.

Sometimes a 'tough draw' works out in the end, Novak's draw isnt a 'walk in the park either, compared to his draws in 2024
Alcaraz got to the QFs last year, he didnt play a pre tournament before the AO, just a few exho matches at the AO, which may work in his favor
Sinner got a workable draw
Remember this draw is on paper so anything can happen. Even your predication of Medvedev making the final and winning the 1st 2 sets again :)

Just a fun fact, the player he just beat (Augustin Tirante) did beat Rublev last year in Bastaad (on clay tough, even if Tirante is not a clay courter, as one would expect from an Argentinian). Still, last year Rublev also had an up and coming Brazilian in R1 (Thiago Wild), and was able to beat him in five sets.

I don’t know if it’s discussed elsewhere but I’ve only seen brief highlights of it: what do we make of Carlos new service action? Seems he’s leaning back on it a lot, which can cause strain, and might make it difficult to play in windy conditions. But I haven’t seen enough of it to say if he’s getting more power or accuracy or anything else from it.

Has he improved his serve?
