The Tournament:

The formation of what now is known as the ASB Classic occurred when Ari Hallenberg and Global Sports saw a hole in the marketplace and asked Tennis New Zealand about creating an event in Auckland.

The first staging was held in 1985 as part of the 1986 tour and it moved to its current pre-Australian Open spot on the calendar, New Zealand's lone stop, in 1996. It was named the WTA's Tournament Of The Year/APAC in 2014. Src: WTA

About Auckland

AucklandSkyline3Frames4v102.jpg

Auckland is New Zealand's largest city with a population of nearly 1.5 million. Auckland boasts a cosmopolitan blend of European, Maori, Asian and Polynesian cultures, as well as a natural environment that encourages visitors to embrace the Great Outdoors.

The city is based around 2 large harbours with the centrepiece being the Sky Tower which has views of the vibrant Viaduct Harbour district lined with bars and cafes. Auckland Domain, the city’s oldest park, is based around an extinct volcano and home to the formal Wintergardens. Near Downtown, Mission Bay Beach has a seaside promenade.

It's rugged coastline and terrain was formed from volcanic ridges of lava flows. Known as the "City of Sails" - Auckland has more boats per capita than any other city in the world. Rangitoto Island sits majestically off the coast.

The Māori language name for Auckland is Tāmaki or Tāmaki-makau-rau, meaning "Tāmaki with a hundred lovers"

Auckland is regularly listed among the top 10 of the World's most liveable cities.

There are some good young players like Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia and Naomi Mousaka a black girl from Japan.

Kween played today as well as Karolina Wozniacka.

Are you going to see any of the matches this week?

Only on tv. Same next week when atp takes place. We have frequent showers and horrible wind. Much more than normally. The rest of my family will go next week.

Right now an 18yo girl is playing twice older Venus. She's Jade Lewis, your pal's Chris Lewis niece. She's about to win the first set.

Venus beat Jade Lewis and then she announced her arm's injured so she withdrew.

Serena is struggling against a little known compatriot.

And Serena lost to Madison Brengle. Not completely an unknown, Mastoor. Bad news about Venus with the injury.
