The ASB Classic is the biggest men’s professional sporting event in New Zealand and has been held in Auckland since 1956. Played in the week prior to the Australian Open, the ATP World Tour 250 event is a crucial stop in preparation for the year's first Grand Slam tournament.

About Auckland

AucklandSkyline3Frames4v102.jpg

Auckland is New Zealand's largest city with a population of nearly 1.5 million. Auckland boasts a cosmopolitan blend of European, Maori, Asian and Polynesian cultures, as well as a natural environment that encourages visitors to embrace the Great Outdoors.

The city is based around 2 large harbours with the centrepiece being the Sky Tower which has views of the vibrant Viaduct Harbour district lined with bars and cafes. Auckland Domain, the city's oldest park, is based around an extinct volcano and home to the formal Wintergardens. Near Downtown, Mission Bay Beach has a seaside promenade.

It's rugged coastline and terrain was formed from volcanic ridges of lava flows. Known as the "City of Sails" - Auckland has more boats per capita than any other city in the world. Rangitoto Island sits majestically off the coast.

Auckland is regularly listed among the top 10 of the World's most liveable cities.

5 Fun Facts About Auckland

There are over 50 volcanoes in the city of Auckland

The Maori name for Auckland is Tamaki Makaurau

Sir Edmund Hillary (the first to summit Everest with Sherpa Tenzing) is from Auckland

Auckland was the second city to become the capital of New Zealand before Wellington took the title, which it still has today. Auckland lost its role as the capital city because government officials travelling from the south found the journey too arduous, with a single trip taking up to two months.

New Zealand singles tennis is so weak we were only willing to give one total wild card in the men’s and women’s draws combined to New Zealanders. Hopefully Statham can pull an upset against Chung.

Wow. 7 of 9 seeds out in the first round. That is extraordinary.

The competition's getting tougher and they're finally closing the deal when in a position to upset a top player! Isner can't drop out of the top 10 soon enough for me! He's such a throwback to an ancient era of holding serve & pulling out matches in TB's! It's ridiculous IMO!

Yeah, I'm no fan of Isner either... have you watched Cameron Norrie at all? He's got a nice net game and been making a few waves.

Currently British number #2 ranked in the lower end of the top 100. He has been there for almost a year by now.

Norrie is crazy. From nobody to a semifinalist already.

It took about 30+ years, but Britain is finally gaining tractions with some decent players! It was so bad at one point they were paying a Canadian mercenary who's mom is "from the island" to help them out 20 years ago! Without Virginia Wade, they were almost anonymous in the tennis world with a spattering of success with Henman, Barker, and Jo Durie way back when! Murray's done something for them I guess beside ruining his own ability to play by overdoing it at the end of 2016! He hasn't been the same since overtaking Nole at #1 for a hot minute! :nono:

With Sandgren upsetting Kohlschreiber, it is now certain a new ATP event winner will get crowned here in Auckland.
One of the 3:
Norrie, Struff or Sandgren.

Norrie defeated Stuff, so the final will be between him and Sandgren.
Interestingly, Norrie in his childhood lived in New Zeeland.
