Tournament Info

Tier: Premier
Prize Money: $687,900 Surface: Hard Director: Alistair Macdonald

The Apia International Sydney is one of the oldest tournaments in the world, dating back to 1885.

The Sydney Cricket Ground was the first venue for what was then called the New South Wales Open, followed by Double Bay and then White City, which hosted the event for 76 years through 1999. In 2000, the event moved to the Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre, which also hosted the Olympic tennis event that year, and where the combined ATP/WTA event continues to be held the week before the Australian Open.

In 2012, Victoria Azarenka became the first player in eight years to win Sydney and then go on to victory in Melbourne. At the 2013 staging, Agnieszka Radwanska recorded the first double bagel in a WTA final in over six years. Other champions include Jennifer Capriati, Kim Clijsters, Lindsay Davenport, Chris Evert, Justine Henin, Martina Hingis, Amélie Mauresmo, Gabriela Sabatini, Arantxa Sánchez-Vicario, Monica Seles and Petra Kvitova. Evonne Goolagong and Martina Navratilova share the Open Era tournament record with four titles each.

The state capital of New South Wales, the most populous city in Australia and the country's economic center, Sydney is situated on Australia's southeast coast off the Tasman Sea.

The Sydney draw - and Funny - two top players withdraws - again - guess who? - Radwanska and Kvitova - bet they are ok to the Australian Open - how long will it go before this circus stops. Suggestion - no tournaments last week before a slam - and huge fines if players withdraws after winning a tournament - where they looked fit that is. We've seen too much in this "Margaret Tour" IMHO.

Well enough now to the REVISED draw

1 HALEP, Simona ROU - tries again?

I never end up caring much about Sydney. The VERY best people with the best shot at the Aussie title don't usually play Sydney. It's the week before a slam which means if you won you would need to win 3 weeks worth of matches. I wish there was just another week before the Aussie so it would give Sydney a little bump in entries from the top 10.

I think Ana is in love as she was recently engaged. Hopefully she will snap out of her love haze in the next few days. I think all the players who pulled out of tournaments are probably OK physically. I think skipping these tournaments and retiring is more preventative so they can be ready for Melbourne.

Where are the articles which states she's engaged? Have not read or seen any of them.

Halep recovered from a dip in the 2nd set.

Can't believe JJ took Petra out of Wimby only to be bounced out of Sydney in straights by Errani of all people. :cover

Two players struggeling with their form. Lots of errors, poor serving - not good so close to AO:
