All these exos when they should be putting the feet up and resting. Whoever told these guys they were poor?

A lot of these things are related to sponsors/agents and whatnot, so it's not quite as simple as skipping them. Not that it's impossible mind you...

If you can skip the Olympics, the US Open and Oz, you can skip this! ;)

Well knowing Nadal's ego, and I think I do, it will take him a while to heal from this recent loss. He'll skip the exhos for sure. Probably will be back in time for Monte Carlo after visiting a sports psychologist.

All these exhibition matches, hell even the Abu Dhabi tournament are glorified practise sessions and since they do have to practise and prepare during the winter breaks anyway, I don't really see the problem here. That article is way over the top. Andy, Novak and Rafa have chosen places where they can hit the beach, combine it with rest and relaxing tourism and play those exhos at the same time. That's actually a cool idea. I think all of them will eventually find enough rest in December and during the festive periods anyway. No need to worry. You can't expect the world's best players to sit on their arses for 7-8 weeks. The hardest training regimes and workouts for next season are always done in the winter break anyway. If you can combine it with relaxing exhos, beach and sightseeing, all the better I guess.

Bad title for the thread. Do you really think you can hold 10 million dollars in your fist.
That is how much Nadal got for playing four matches in South America few weeks ago.

Yup, as always with Rafa, he's got a good side, a bad side, and an ugly one.

I'm not sure how I feel about the exhos. I do think these guys should be resting or preparing for the upcoming season and not fooling around in South America. At the same time, a tennis career is pretty short and the prospect of earning extra cash and security for the future must be very tempting.

Many of these guys came from little money and they know the days of earning this kind of money are fleeting. I guess I can understand what it is they are doing in playing these, I just hope they take it REALLY easy and not do anything to hurt themselves. Then again, folks like Federer and Nadal (and Djkovic and Murray these days) have made so much money and will just on endorsements for a number of years to come it is something they could consider cutting down drastically so as to rest. But, they are also the ambassadors for the sport worldwide, so maybe that gets to them too.

That's right Shawn, and nobody can blame a player for coining it while they can, unless the same player then turns up at a slam gassed and pleading for reduced schedules for top players.

The thing is, Nadal can make money out of tennis until well into his forties. He's already loaded and really, at this stage of his career, his bank is shored up: shore up the tennis legacy!

OK, clever, but no one slags Federer for going to South America for $12 Million.

You guys will laugh at me for naive, but these guys also take tennis to places where they don't get to see the top players as often, which IS good for the sport. And as far as Rafa playing exho's with Nalbandian for his retirement, the guy is his friend. Why shouldn't he help send him off in style?

Actually, Nadal and Djokovic play a lot of DC.

Actually, I don't have any problems with exhibition matches being played by any
player. I also don't have a problem with the huge amounts of money they make playing
these exos (the money made by Nadal in SA tour is equivalent to that can be got by
winning 7 USO trophies). If somebody is willing to pay, what is our problem.

As already pointed by many, there are at least 3 upside to these exos.

1. It acts as a practice session for players. (not all but some; not SA but Mudabala for example)
2. Players get to make lot of money.
3. Players act as ambassadors bringing the game to tennis impoverished countries.

My only problem is if the same players keep complaining about the length of Tennis
Schedule by ATP. I am not going to name names. You know who complains and who
does not.
