Poor Nico lost in straights. He will need to get his sleeves rolled up big time if he wants to get back on track. He has now fallen to 174 in the rankings.
This was a rough draw for him, to meet Gasquet in the QF in such an event, while in Robredo's bracket who pulled out a player I have never heard about in my life was put as a LL and got a bye in the second round.
Still scratching my head why a player ranked 440 is getting the LL spot, when that is usually given to the highest ranked loser in the qualifications.
Perhaps the Estoril organizers have their own rules.
If it is known that LL's services are needed AFTER the quals are over, then the spot goes to
highest ranked loser in the qualifications. If it is know after the quals starts and before the quals ends,
they randomly select one of the losers in the final round. That is why the name is "lucky loser".
This is done to prevent match fixing. The highest ranked guy in the final round of quals has
no longer an incentive (if he is already guaranteed a spot due to somebody pulling out) and
may actually voluntarily lose, especially if by doing so he can make his friend qualify. The
random draw prevents that.
