Probably the match of the round get your 'popcorn' ready

I see Holger Rune is starting his breakout campaign with a splash. Belly splash, that is.

Lehecka is quite a decent player who climbed up the rankings this last year or so. Doesn't get too many mentions around here I guess, but if you check last year he beat a ton of quality opponents.

By the way, Fonseca just won a challenger match against Mackenzie McDonald.

He injured his back and was out of action for 3 months, after the Madrid Open this year, and has found form, I am not surprised that Rune lost, a hard first round opponent in Jiri

Lehecka looked like he was an up-and-comer last year - he went from #81 in 2022 to #31 in 2023, and finished the year age 22 (and only just 22). He beat some good players at the AO: Coric, Eubanks, Norrie, Auger-Aliassime, then lost to Tsitsipas in the QF. He won his first title this year and despite the injury, still rose a few ranks to #28 to end the year, improving his W% from 57% to 64%. If we assume a bit more improvement to the 70% level at his peak, that's a guy who might sneak into the top 10 for a time.

Anyhow, he's another example of just how deep the field has become. As I said elswhere, after the Big Two, there are a half a dozen "quasi elites" and then a couple dozen guys who can do some damage and potentially win a Masters.

Perricard d Krygios in 3 sets 76(2) 67(4) 76(3), Perricard with 36 aces
What else would you expect
Nick had a MTO after losing the 1st set, his wrist is still a concern, also given pain killers
Nick was searching for his first singles win since he last played in October 2022, ( Nick is still in the doubles with Novak in Brisbane)
Perricard was 'tidier' when he had to be
Starting the new year hot
"This guy is gonna be a problem for a long time" Nick Krygios after the match

Zverev has begun working with his former fitness trainer Jez Green, he feels that some of his tough losses in 2024 were due to becoming tired in the latter stages of big matches.Zverev revealed that to reporters at the United Cup in Perth ( source tennisinfinity) Zverev is also a diabetic that in itself is hard to manage at times, , especially as a athlete.

RodLaver @ rodlaver,

"Unfortunately I wont be there for the first Grand Slam of the year. While disappointed to miss # AO2025 and interact with tennis fans in Melbourne, I will be watching from home and cheering on the players as they battle for glory.I hope you get to Melbourne Park to enjoy a Summer of tennis".

Seeing it is 2025 where I live and most of you are still stuck in 2024
I will leave you with this quote ( I am going out for a New Year's Day Lunch)

" I tried to be normal once. Worst three minutes of my life"

Stefanos Tsitsipas ( who else lol! )

Fonseca keeps winning (in the challenger he is playing). Beats #142 Aidukovic 6x1 7x5 after missing two match points with 40x15 at 5x3 in the second (that's how you do it, Roger).

Seventh straight win by the kid

35-year old Kei Nishikori defeated Karen Khachanov in 3 sets. Would love to see a Grigor-esque resurgence from him. If Sascha Zverev is the best player never to win a Slam, Nishikori might be the best player never to win a big title.

I just finished watching highlights of his win in 3 sets against KK. Kei will be in the top 100 in the live rankings next week, he has played just 10 tour level tournaments in the last 18 months I believe., sadly his body has let him down with injuries, in his career to date, when he is 'on' he is great to watch

And really, going back to 2022, he has played a total of 10 ATP tour level events (including this one) over the last 3+ years. 0 in 2022, 1 in 2023, 8 in 2024, 1 so far in 2025.

It also didn't help that Kei was born in 1989, following a very strong cohort of players born in 1985-88, like Wawrinka, Nadal, Djokovic, del Potro, and Cilic. If Kei was born before than those guys, it's very likely he wins some slams.

I feel like "Demon" is taking a similar role of Ruud on tour - no one expects him to be a fixture in the top 10, but he might just prove everyone wrong. It is too easy, but both remind me a bit of Ferrer: limited upside, but very high floor that will earn both solid ranking points.

Fonseca keeps winning, just beat top 100 and pretty good player Fearnley in another two quick sets.
Now to the final...

A lot of people now commenting on Brazilian forums, and quite a few saying what I posted a while ago: that he is defending way more than before, and also brought a lot of variation to his game.

I haven't seen any of this week's matches, but his stats are pretty good. No sets lost, I think he was broken only once, and only once he lost four games in a set.
