The Tournament:

The Championships, Wimbledon, commonly known simply as Wimbledon, is the oldest tennis tournament in the world, and is considered by many to be the most prestigious.

It has been held at the All England Club in Wimbledon, London since 1877. It is one of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments, the others being the Australian Open, the French Open and the US Open. Since the Australian Open shifted to hardcourt in 1988, Wimbledon is the only major still played on grass.

It continues to honour many long-standing traditions, including a strict dress code for competitors, the eating of strawberries and cream, and royal patronage.

WTA legend Martina Navratilova has the ladies tournament record with nine singles titles. She also has the Open Era record with seven doubles titles. On top of that, she has four mixed doubles crowns, giving her a remarkable 20 Wimbledon triumphs altogether. Others who have dominated the event in the Open Era include Steffi Graf with seven singles titles and Serena and Venus Williams, with five each.

The Players:

The big question on is can Serena Williams retain her title and finally equal Steffi Graf's haul of 22 major titles? Williams is a 6 time champion on the hallowed turf of SW19. Her sister Venus has won the title 5 times. Other seeds to watch out for include French Open champion and 2015 finalist Garbiñe Muguruza and 2014 champ Petra Kvitova.

I think she's going to have to be sharp and ready if she gets McHale in the 2nd round. But with Azarenka out, there are not so many real challengers, so, as usual, it's going to be a lot down to Serena. Halep is less than impressive, Kvitova lost the other day. I hope Muguruza gets a chance to capitalize on her RG win and make the final.

Expert Picks:

Sports Illustrated:

Richard Deitsch: Reports of the decline of Serena Williams are premature. I see her motivated on a surface she likes after losing in Melbourne and Paris.

Stanley Kay: Despite Serena Williams losing her last two Slam finals, I’m still bullish on her chances. She was outplayed in the finals at Melbourne and Roland Garros, but I think she’ll come through and win No. 22 at Wimbledon.

Elizabeth Newman: Serena Williams. Duh.

Jon Wertheim: Her shortcomings at the previous three majors notwithstanding, I think you have to stick with Serena Williams. She’s won Wimbledon four times since 2009 alone; that slobberknocker of a serve is aided by the grass. And as is so often the case in the women’s game, if you’re not picking Serena you need to justify an alternative. Garbine Muguruza? Sure, maybe. Though it's always tough to win two straight majors. Petra Kvitova? She’s been as mysterious as ever. Simona Halep? Her career record at the AELTC is 7-5. Venus? Madison Keys, now residing in the posh neighborhood of the Top 10? We'll take the top seed and defending champ.

Jamie Lisanti: This will be the fourth time in a row I pick Serena with No. 22 on the line. Here’s to hoping this is the one.

My Dark Horse for Wimbledon is Madison Keys,I have been impressed with her lead up on grass before Wimbledon.she will have her hands full with Flipkens, who loves the grass and has done well at Wimbledon in the past.I do not like Aga's draw, she will have to face Domi again early who recently defeated her, also Caroline Garcia, who is a big hitter of the ball.I feel Caroline's game is more suited to grass than clay.though she did win the RG doubles.I am hoping for Pliskova to Finally do well at a Major, her game suits the grass, though I am still hesitant about her chances.Petra is still carrying an upper thigh injury, she has been inconsistent this year, even though we have seen in the past at Wimbledon her favorite surface how she can play.I would be surprised if Garbine makes the final, though she has a good draw,I feel just winning RG,not a lot of time to adjust to grass, where she went out early in Spain.
Serena to me has to start well, her overall game at the last 2 Majors has been all over the place, her serve has gone missing, also her footwork at crucial times in each of the finals, also she needs to be more aggressive, both Angie and Garbine had a game plan, stuck to it and both were more aggressive than Serena at the AO and RG. I am still undecided with a winner.

Well - I know it'll not be a slam as predicted - then it should be the first this year. The WTA tour is crazy and seeds are falling in most tournaments. That's because the game is tougher on the womens side, you have to be spot on even against players outside top 100. I think we'll have a surprise winner in Wimbledon - not that I don't like Serena having her triumph, but she's not on top. Saw a couple of her matches in FO and she was like an old diesel engine - which caan be good up to 1 million kms but no she'll be out before the quarters IMHO. Caroline is not there yet even if she's been playing well she still needs the final 5 grams. I'm impressed by her play when she's not tired - it's flawless tennis and some of that comes from her new coach David Kotyza. This coach will stay behind her. Caroline started in Nothingham as a rusty player coming back from a severe ankle injury and is getting better and better and are now after 6 grass matches ready for Wimbledon, and iI hope she'll get a few rounds there. If she plays like she did against Stosur 61 62 she can get far. Who wins Wimledon - aint got the faintest idea - PUIG?

Very unpredictable but look out for Coco Vandeweghe on grass. I don't think Puig wins. If Serena mentally implodes again then Garb might step up to take her second slam.

Hoping to see a good showing from my fave Cibulkova... but she's not in the running to win the title. Also be good to see Caro get a few matches under her belt. Like Coco on grass and Caroline Garcia too. I really have no idea who takes the title - the WTA is pretty random at the moment but if Garbine won here it would make a huge statement. I have a gut feeling that Serena won't tie Steffi here, although I do think she does it eventually.

Good to see you @Hoergren and the post is pretty spot on IMO. The WTA is a bit of a crapshot at the moment with predictions. I don't think Serena wins here either... but no real idea who is going to take title. I don't think it will be Kerber. Garbine might step up and win back to back slams. If I had to make any prediction, then I think that might be it.

Well Britbox - start rooting for Cibu she just won Eastbourne 75 63 over Pliskova so she has the momentum - why not?
