Muguruza will be in third round today and some players have not yet played their first round...very telling scheduling
Not so fast! She just dropped the opening set to Cepelova. Let's see if she makes out of R2.

Venus was pushed to 3 sets earlier, but made it through 6-3 in the decider. :clap JJ in trouble. Down a break in the decider. Vinci is closing on R3.

Yep. Cepelova up 5-1 in the 2nd. I'm guessing maidenslamitis is kicking in on Mugu

I've never seen Garbine playing so badly, she looks like has glue in her tennis shoes and making very erratic shots, ridiculous and more losing against that opponent :cover:eyepop:s

I have not checked the stats. But, from whatever I saw of the second set, it is more like Mugu losing than Cepelova winning. Every shot was going out or going to the net, timing totally off. Botched an easy swing volley on a break point.

Would have been much better for her to go out to Camila in R1 as Giorgi is known for taking top 10 scalps. But losing to a qualifier in straights is an epic fail. :cover

She's also dropping a boatload of points as she made the final last year.

RE: 2016 Wimbledon Championships Day 4: Thurdsday, June 30 - Order of Play

FACTOID: Of the past eight first-time women’s Grand Slam champions, none have made the quarter-finals in their next major.

Kerber (first round), Flavia Pennetta (retired), Marion Bartoli (retired), Victoria Azarenka (fourth round), Samantha Stosur (first round), Petra Kvitova (first round), Li Na (second round) and Francesca Schiavone (first round) all fell early.

1. Just by not retiring from WTA, Mugu already did better than two of them.
2. Just by winning the first round match, Mugu already did better than four of them.

I still believe that Mugu will be a multi-slam champion and not a one slam wonder like Ana or Sam or several others.

This is what happens when people are dumb and base things on one match. Heather Watson and Mladenovic who were such tough outs and potential hazards for Serena this Wimbledon are out. Be careful of the talking points you create now media and tennis analysts. Same with Muguruza come on now based on WTA history when has anyone other than Serena in recent years followed up a slam win with another slam win immediately after.

Cepelova has taken out Serena Williams and also Simona Halep. Give her some credit. She may not be great, but she does not choke when opportunity comes her way.

This has nothing to do w/ Cepelova. Obviously, she gets credit for winning the match as she moves on. This is all about Mugu. It was a huge fail in a slam after she just won one, period.

I agreed. See my post #7 above. But, not all WTA girls accept a gift when given. Cepelova is good at accepting.

Forget winning, how about consistently getting to the SF or Finals of a major? None of the other slam champs have done that

Garbine was completely off in this match, her serve was awful same like her shots and movement, why? who knows but obviously she can do much better than that but clearly it wasn't her day, her face said everything since the first set, she wants to 'disappear' as soon as possible :cover

Vinci comes through in straights. JJ gets it level at 6-6 and then promptly dumps serve. Erakovic serves it out 8-6 in the decider.

Hope they move Coco's match to some other court ASAP. No point making her wait on Gasquet when other courts are free.
