The only thing I have noticed about Serena is how inconsistent she is on return of serve. She needs to get that in order to really give the players she will face in the later rounds something to think about during matches.

Having watched her first three matches it looks like Serena is putting a bit more bite and depth on her groundstrokes a bit more consistently than she did the first half of the year.

That means that Serena is more relaxed, more focused and dialed in ,, this means next week if her hammer serve is still thumping she will be tough to beat

Well I think for the first time she has some real strong motivation at a slam. She could lose #1, she has an opportunity to turn the heartache of last year into a great talking point this year, she already now owns the most match wins for Slams with this win. She could break Graf's consecutive weeks at #1 with a tournament win, own the most US Open titles in the open era with a win, own the most slams in the Open era. A lot to play for with this slam, so good motivation for her to use. More than anything, I think Serena wants to stay at number 1.

I don't why you feel that staying #1 is better than winning #23 which would in most tennis historian make her the GOAT.

Being number 1 again is like dating a super model but the real prize in life is having a lady that is not only gorgeous on the outside but a beautiful human being inside (a real soul mate ) ..

However, you consistently keep harping on being # 1 ranked which is your right and I can respect your opinion.:clap

Look Serena can win a slam no matter where she is ranked. However, I do think with age being number 1 means a lot to her and that goes with keeping it. If it didn't matter to her, she wouldn't even have made the trek and tried to play Cincy. I'm just going by actions, and why waste a plane ticket to Cincy if she didn't care about it. I didn't say that winning #23 wasn't important or better than staying #1. However, she can do both here, and I think she wants to do just that. Once you have a good thing why let go of it if you don't have to let go of it.

I totally agree with what you wrote.

Fact is, winning that slam and getting to 23 is the biggest motivation she needs. Number one, while is important, is secondary to her, you can trust that.

#1 is important only because of the continuous streak. She definitely WILL NOT get another chance at breaking Steffi's record on the continuous streak of being ranked #1. On the other hand, even if Serena does not win USO this year, she will get many more stabs at bagging #23. That is the reason why #1 is more important.

Well it looks like both records will go hand in hand as Serena has very little margin for error here and essentially will need to win it depending on what the other ladies do this tournament.

The average person probably not, but who knows what Serena will take and cherish from her career. I didn't realize until recently that the Olympics really meant that much to her. There are surprisingly a lot of things through out her career that I didn't realize meant something to her. If it didn't mean anything to her, she wouldn't have cried that day that she got back to number 1. If it didn't mean that much to her, she wouldn't have attempted to try to play Cincy. She was never scheduled for that tournament, so why bother if she knew she had an injured shoulder? It will always be intangibles that separate players and give talking points. While sure slam numbers matter most, it is nice to be able to add other talking points to the resume. I think she realizes this when other records are broken. It is a cool I did that moment. Does it matter to the average person maybe not, but it might matter to Serena especially if she has a chance to accomplish it.

Although she is currently tied , Serena has the record already

Hingis, Peas lost to Coco and Ram. in 2nd round.

Does this mean Martina drops Coco as her dub's partner after this tourney? IIRC, even if she got past Coco, she'd have to play her old partner in the next round being the top seeds of MxD's! :cover :puzzled :nono

Just got back from a day at USO. The most notenorthy thing is the support Venus and Serena are getting. The applause after their wins was ear-splitting.

No shame in losing to Ram. He is after all the Gold Medalist in Mixed Doubles. :snicker :laydownlaughing
