Roger's been keeping the points short and pretty much breezing through this fortnight. Does he continue to buzz through Stan? I think so. Picking Fed in three or four.

Still can't believe how easily Federer has sailed through this tournament. I expected him to have a bump in the road somewhere but it has been an impressive display by "the old man". Wawrinka is playing well as well, so I gave him a set but Federer could run away with this one in three sets.

Federer is playing great so far. Wawrinka is playing so so until now, but picked up steam today.

This can be looked up in 2 different ways.

1. Fed is playing so well, but Waw is playing only moderately well and so Fed has advantage.

2. On the other hand, one could say Fed is already playing at a high level that there is no room to up it any further. But, Stan can up his game several gears considering he does not seem to be playing well (except in today's match) even though winning without much trouble.

The head to head is 16-3. (all three on clay).

Hard court head to head is 11-0.

Grandslam head to head is 4-1.

The superstructure of Ashe favors Fed.

I think all of this points to Fed having a good Friday.

If nothing works, Fed has at least got Mirka to shout "Cry Baby". Stan has no one. That will be an intangible. :snicker

Fed in 3.5 (i.e, 3 or 4).

I'll take Roger in 4. Don't want to see it go 5, but I think it might depend on if Stan from today or Stan from 2 days ago vs. Donald Young shows up. You can never tell which Stan you're going to get. Which is why he could conceivably win 2 majors this year and still only be #4 in the world. Just goes to show you how mediocre the rest of his year has been. Less than mediocre really because if he wins the US Open then 4,000 of his 6,780 points for the year will have come from 2 tournaments. Since his win at the French this is the first tourney he's made it beyond the QFs in. :eyepop Does Good Stan show up on Friday or Bad Stan? I doubt he even knows the answer to that.

What do you mean Stan's got no one? He's got a 19 year-old to impress...which really...ain't that hard to do because most 19 year old GIRLS (not a woman, a GIRL) don't know caca for shinola. I like Stan...but no offense, dude, you need to date in your own age range and stop hanging out at tennis camps... :lolz: Uh...am I allowed to say that or am I going to get deleted? :cover

I think Stan now knows how to beat Federer. He does not seem to fear him anymore. I think Stan will be able to make it a back-hand vs backhand match on big points, to get errors from Federer. Stan in 4 close sets.

The thing that scares me most about this is that the last time I was this confident Roger would win a GS semi was the 2010 USO vs. a WTA serving Nole who had struggled to get through an easy draw.

I think this is the toughest surface for Stan to play Roger on. On clay and slower hards it is tougher for Roger to get Stan out of position and the latter has more time to line up his huge groundstrokes. On grass Roger struggles to break anyone with a decent serve so Stan can at least make things tight (and did in their only grass meeting last year at Wimbledon). For this match Stan will need to have a big day serving and hope Roger's is off. If Roger serves like he did most of the Isner match he might find himself in trouble.

Stanimal in 5 (maybe 4) it's not a question of "who's better" but Stanimal knows how to beat daddy, like Nadal used to do too a long, long, long time ago

I agree. I'm picking Fed in three.

Also, thank you, Nehmeth, for creating the poll/thread! :clap

It might be a weird thing to say but this match is up to Stan. He hits his serve, forehand and backhand harder than Roger. When they are on, he has beaten everyone, including Roger. But as Darth was saying, the surface is what is on Roger's side. He can take time away from Stan and prevent him from lining up the missiles like he can on clay, like RG this year. If Roger can rush Stan, he wins, if Stan can control the baseline, he wins.

Not to be confrontational but Stan has never beaten Roger off of clay. Comparing that to the Nadal matchup is pretty out there. It's a big moment for both of the players but Roger has a little more on the line given his age. Also as happy as Roger says he is for Stan, don't think for a second he won't fight like hell to not be upstaged by him and become Swiss #2. If Stan wins Friday that'd be the 2nd time he beat Roger in a slam this year, and that'd be a big deal to both of them.

Stan had never beaten the big 3 in a GS until he did on HC and Clay, why not now?

Roger and Novak would be 0-10 this tournament if we went by your predictions :)

As to why not...you'll see on Friday. The old timer is still better than Stan on the faster stuff.

I'm not talking about the past but about the present. I wouldn't be surprised if Wawrinka wins

^ I wouldn't be that surprised either, it's way more reasonable than thinking guys like Lopez, Isner, Gasquet, etc. had more than a puncher's chance in recent matches.

I've never thought that Isner and Gasquet could win easy and less after to see their last two awful matches, what a pathetic game!

They are badly overmatched. On most days Stan will be overmatched by Roger on this surface too. But we know what Stan can do and we've seen him rise to the occasion in a big way at the later stages of majors the past couple years. That's why it wouldn't be "that" surprising if he wins Friday. I would still be pretty surprised though.
