I almost forgot to get this started but here we are in the third annual Slam Challenge! (Mods, can we sticky this for the length of the tournament?).

The rules are basically the same as last year but I'd like to organize and rank a bit differently in order to somewhat mirror the actual ATP tour. I don't think we can get enough participant buy-in to do all the Masters, but I'd like to do the four Slams and the World Tour Finals, and then have awards for each Slam and a "year-end #1" for the participant with the most points. In other words, please note that this year the Slam Challenge includes FIVE tournaments - all four Slams and the World Tour Finals.

Here's how the revised system will work:

  1. Pick players and accrue points as last year - Pretty simple, just follow the rules below - the same as last year.
  2. Results for Each Tournament - The participant with the highest point total is the Winner of the tournament, the second highest the Runner-Up or Finalist, #3-4 are Semifinalists, #5-8 Quarterfinalists, #9-16 Fourth Rounders, etc. We probably won't have many more players than that, so you're pretty much guaranteed a 3R or 4R result ;).
  3. Year-end #1 - The player with the most points at the end of the year--after the four Slams and World Tour Final--is crowned the Year-end #1.

This system gives bragging rights for each of the five tournaments, but also a year-end #1. If I get a chance, I'll translate and post the results from 2013 and 2014 so we have a sense of history.

2015 SLAM PREDICTION CHALLENGE - RULES
  • How to Play - Pick a Winner, Runner-up, two Semifinalists, four Quarterfinalists, one Dark Horse and one Wildcard candidate for each Slam; for the WTF, the rules will be slightly different.
  • Points - 12 Winner, 8 Runner-up, 3 Semifinalist, 1 Quarterfinalist for a total of 30 possible. Note that points are not cumulative, but you do get points if a player finishes lower than what you picked (e.g. If you pick Djokovic to win but he's the runner-up, you still get 8 points; if you pick Murray to be the runner-up but he wins, you only get the 8 points you picked him for).
  • Dark Horse - Gets points for whatever their final position is; they cannot have won a Slam within the last two calendar years, or eight Slams. This means that you cannot pick Nadal, Djokovic, Murray, Wawrinka, or Cilic as the Dark Horse.
  • Wildcard - Gets points as the Dark Horse, but cannot be ranked in the top 10 at the beginning of the tournament.
  • Tiebreakers - In cases in which two participants have equal points, the leader among the two will be determined by the following tiebreaks, in this order: Correctly chosen winner; points of Dark Horse; points of Wildcard.
  • Missing Slams - Members who want to join after the AO or miss a later Slam get a total number of points equal to the lowest score for the missed Slam, minus one point. The default points for the three Slams so far are AO: 9, RG: 1, Wim: 4, or a total of 14.
  • Late Penalty - You can make your picks without penalty until the first serve of Round 1. After that there will be a -3 point penalty per round (or two days), so if you're late by a few days you still can accrue some decent points!

*NOTE: While you can slot a player in two spots, there is really no point to it and you're essentially wasting a slot. I will try to watch any "double-booking" but if I don't before the tournament begins, I'll simply disqualify the lower pick. For example, if you pick a player for both the Dark Horse and Quarterfinal then the QF pick is lost as the DH can only equal or surpass it in terms of points.

Good luck and let me know if any of the above isn't clear! Let's consider this a "beta" version for a day or two, just to make sure I'm not completely missing something. Oh yeah, PLEASE PARTICIPATE!!!!!

Many times the draw doesn't mean too much, it just a paper, during a tournament meny things can happen and at the end nobody knows who is going to win. But I hope that Rafa plays well and been able to take off the bad memories from the AO 2014. This Exo has been a good help for him to practice which he needs more than anything else. Hope he makes a great tournament, vamos!!!!! :clap

This translation into ATP points seems to be a convoluted idea. In the ATP ranking it makes sense
as the top two earned it by reaching the final round. Here since there are no rounds involved for
the contestants, this translation does not mean anything IMHO.

What happens when two or more contestants accrue the same number of points? Do they both get 2000 points? Or do they split it? Surely splitting cannot be logical choice as in that case, the
second place winner will get more points 1200 than the first place winner. If you don't split and
give each one 2000, your analogy to ATP ranking gets completely lost as well as there
cannot be two winners in one grand slam.

The main thing I wanted to do was have distinct winners for the individual tournaments, but also year-to-date rankings and then a year-end #1. I suppose the translation to ATP points is unnecessary, and I could just rank through Slam Challenge points - either way it amounts to the same thing. The reason I was thinking ATP points was to give some semblance of mirroring the actual tour, so that the winner of the AO would also get 2,000 points. But maybe I shnould just keep it at the Slam Challenge points for the sake of simplicity? The main thing is that I want everyone to be able to have round finishes for each tournament - a W, F, SF, QF, 4R, etc. So that by the end of the year it might look something like this:

GameSetAndMath: SF, SF, W, 4R, (SF)

Those are four Slams and then the (WTF). You'd have a ranking based upon the point total.

Nice results, by the way! ;)

p.s. The tiebreaks are described in the rules above.

I took your advice, GS&M, and got rid of the ATP points. They just added an extra level of unnecessary complexity. We can still have the different finishes, we just don't need that extra level.

AntiPusher, you're waisting slots by double-booking Kei. Also, Andy can't be the Wildcard as he's ranked in the top 10.

Wow, I can't believe my eyes, Kieran. But rest easy - I'm fairly certain (as in 99.999999%) that your picks on our lovely little website have absolutely no impact on Rafa's performance.
