First of all, I just checked out the live rankings with 2013 Roland Garros taken off and Novak is #1. I decided to play with the numbers a bit, depending upon how Novak and Rafa do.

Live Rankings (with 2013 RG taken off, but including the 10 pts for playing 2014 RG)
1. Novak 11400
2. Rafa 10510

(Novak +890)

Here's how their points match-up, round by round:
NOVAK/RAFA
2R 11175...10545
3R 11220...10590
4R 11310...10680
QF 11490...10860
SF 11850...11220
F 12330...11700
W 13130...12500

What this means...

For Rafa to be #1, he needs to either:
*Win Roland Garros (12500)
*Make it to the final (11700), with Novak losing in the QF (11490) or earlier

There's also an interesting--but very unlikely--possibility that they're tied, if Novak goes out in the 3R and Rafa in the SF.

The bottom line, though, is that not only does Novak has a very good chance of being #1 after Roland Garros, they're almost certainly going to be neck-and-neck going into the summer. If Novak wins, then he's going to have at least a 1430 point lead with mainly hard court tournaments remaining. Of course Rafa can make up a ton of points with a strong showing at Wimbledon as he has no points to defend versus Novak's 1200.

Should be exciting summer - maybe a bit of leap-frogging, no?

This is an immediate one, it's not the same as the other ones, it's specific only to RG...

Spamming? Don't you think that's a tad harsh?

What's your deal, Jesus? I've been getting a lot of negativity from you for a bit now. Did I offend you in some way?

He's just grumpy like that. Gotta get used to him. He'll grow on you eventually once you get past the needless rudeness over minor issues.

Actually, this thread is different from either of those, in intention and reality. The rankings general purposes rankings related posts, and we use it to note biggest movers of the week. The race to London is this year's points only. El Dude's is specifically about the #1, and the state of it right now in to the near future. I don't see what's to object to.

I agree Moxie :) But sadly unless an injury would happen to Nole I would have to pick him as #1.
I don't want to :cry

You don't have to pick him as #1. He still has to earn it. If he does, then no need to cry, only congratulate him. But my point was that it's OK to have a thread that watches the race between #1 and #2, which is different from the other rankings threads. The switch could even happen at RG, so it's OK to be on the vigil.

I agree. It's always good to remember that while occasionally taking the rival to the woodshed is fun, it's the memory of rafa beating Novak at the USO that makes the last four victories so great. The adversity is what makes the narrative. From an actual investment and entertainment value, I think both Rafa and Novak fans will enjoy it most, if #1 changes hands multiple times over the next few years. For the opposite reason, the fedal rivaly has been a dud for a good six years.

I think you've got the key to the rivalry…who's going to win the next big one, and how they might trade the #1, is compelling viewing. RG is up for grabs, though only between the two of them, barring upset, and so the #1 is likely to change hands, soon, or rather soon. In the now and near-future, they are surely the most fascinating rivalry. As to the Fedal one, I don't think it was a "dud," as it provided much great tennis. When it stopped being "Fedal," it was still "Big 4," and so the rivalry across the 4 of them was also good cross-pollinated rivalry. But for now, it's Rafa and Novak. It'll be interesting to see if Rafa has enough gas in the tank to run against another big rival.

I beg to differ. If you were to ask Nadal fans if they're so tired of their guy beating Fed that they want the old guy to start winning again, I doubt you'd have many takers.

Ralf has 13 slams, Novak has 6 slams. I would like Novak to win every time they meet and see him narrow the differences in slam count as much as possible in these next few years.

:puzzled But I guess that's just me.

Very honest answer. As a Nadal fan, I might give over a MS or a YEC to Federer, based on surface, but a Slam…never. You're saying the race is on, and fair point. :clap

Agreed, but stepping back and looking at it honestly. I can say, I enjoy Novak's wins against rafa more than just about anybody else, because of their context. As a fan of Novak, I want him to win every match, but I also know I enjoy the fact that every match against nadal will have me biting my nails. Then again horror is my favorite genre. I get off on suspense.

Not a fan of horror. I spent enough years watching Rafa win the big matches at the slams. To see that reversed over the next 3-4 years would never get old for me.

But you were a fan of Rafa during most of that time. So that would make you a fan of the "feel-good" genre. (Just funning you.) :lolz:

True... I was a fan of both and always let it be known my first allegiance was to Novak. Then when he started winning everything I wasn't allowed to be a fan of both anymore. ;)
